LOCATION
COSAR is in the heart of the Argentine Pampas, one of the main and best honey producers regions in the world.
Each apiculture environment has distinctive characteristics depending on the flowers in the area. We have four different environments in our area in Santa Fe:
Central area:
It is the milk producing area in Santa Fe, covered mainly by alfalfa (medicago sativa) and white clover (trifolium repens) as nectar-producing plants.
The color of the honey obtained in this area is between light and extra-light, with minimums of 5 mm pfund and maximums of 35 mm pfund. There are 22.500 beehives in this area.
Northeast area:
It is the eastern area of the province of Santa Fe, which used to be covered by wild forests. Now vast areas have been cleared and cultivated, being sunflower the main crop there.
Sunflower is the main nectar-producing plant, and its color is between35 and 55 mm pfund. COSAR has around 2.500 beehives in this area.
Northwest area:
It is mainly a cattle raising area, where the fattening of cattle in the fields is the principal activity. A rotation of sunflower is used by some farmers. The most important nectar-producing plants are Melilotus (Melilotus alba), alfalfa (Medicago Sativa) and sunflower. The honey of this area varies from 15mm pfund to 45 mm pfund produced by 12.500 beehives.
Center-east area:
This is the area along the Paraná River and its swamps, where vegetables are grown. There is also cattle’s raising here.
The most important nectar-producing plants are the natural flowers of the area, such as Echium plantaginum, Senecio sp., as well as the flowers (Cataay sp.) in the swamps of the Paraná River. The honey is produced in this area by 2500 beehives (between 40 and 80 mm pfund.)
We are very careful to find the right location for our beehives, far from industries, roads, cities, etc.
